Wild Herd

The Lunesdale herd is one of a number of herds of Fell ponies which still live a semi-feral existence in their natural habitat, in this case on Roundthwaite Common. Roundthwaite Common is a vast area of fell land, consisting of hills and valleys, where the ponies run freely for much of the year. They are brought down to the farmstead to foal and to be covered by the stallion and are fed hay when the weather is bad in winter when they will appear at the fell gate, but apart from this the majority of them live much as nature intended and as such retain their natural characteristics and instincts.
